4-H Dog Project: We are starting the 4-H Dog project in the fall! We would like to see who might be interested in participating in the project. We also hope to make a field trip in July to the State 4-H Dog Show to learn as well as some other activities to get started this summer. Please fill out the google form if you are interested in the 4-H dog project: https://forms.gle/uYVhHLcN4bYy5eNc6 Please fill out the form by June 1st.

Here is some information about the project:

    What is the dog project?

It is a chance to teach 4-H members to be responsible dog owners. Students own or lease the dog they work with in their project. In Milam County, Milam Touch of Love will ensure students wanting mixed breed dogs will have a project dog. Project Managers will work to get a purebred dog and breeder/mentor for 4-H members who want to compete in conformation, especially in AKC competition. Participants can train their dogs as one part of the project.

    Sign up:

Students need to sign up online and pay annual dues. It is helpful if one parent will sign up to volunteer. That allows the project to sponsor and participate in more events and opportunities to learn. This is a great way to work toward goals with your child and to help the organizer/volunteers who are taking on the dog project on behalf of your children.

    Benefits to the dog project:

In addition to learning about dog husbandry and training, participants learn organization, how to research and select a dog that meets a specific niche and the chance to earn scholarships. In addition, many of the 4-H tasks overlap with American Kennel Club title qualifications, and participants can compete in both programs. In addition, students learn effective communication skills, and ultimately will be able to organize community events, research complex issues, give presentations, make decisions, and help teach and guide others through the process of choosing the dog that will best fit their family and teach others about proper dog care. Students and leaders will keep records to document their progress.

    Texas 4-H LEAD Academy:

LEAD Academy will be hosted June 6-9, 2022 in College Station on Texas A&M University Campus. Registration for this event is tied to the Texas 4-H Roundup Registration in 4Honline and follow the same registration timeline. Cost is $25 for Monday (includes evening meal), Tuesday has no charge, Wednesday is $25 (includes lunch), and Thursday is $25 (includes lunch). Participants can register for one, two, three, or all four days of LEAD Academy. Registration Deadline: May 9

Event Includes: (Detailed schedule and workshop descriptions can be found at:  https://drive.google.com/file/d/1hxcMfXARzpWjwGjGdNQKD5XF2_5nceDZ/view)

    Youth Track

LEAD Academy is geared toward 4-H members who are currently in the 9th – 12th grades (as of 9/1/2021).

    • Youth will gain practical, next-level leadership skills that will give them a heightened sense of responsibility and capacity to connect as active members of their communities, nation, and world.
    • The event is designed to engage youth in hands-on educational activities in which they explore, practice, and master existing and newly developed skills and knowledge in civic engagement, civic education, and personal development.
    • From this experience, we hope youth attending will apply what was learned to make a difference in their communities.

    Adult Track

LEAD Academy Adult Volunteer Track is geared toward 4-H parents, adult volunteers, and agents.

    • Volunteers can connect and network with other volunteers and parents.
    • It is an opportunity for volunteers to sharpen their skills to help them while working with the 4-H members in their clubs and projects.
    • Last year, a few sessions were offered for our adult volunteers. Our goal is to expand the workshop offerings for adult volunteers to help them to feel confident in working with the young people in our 4-H program.
